B’HAR בְּהַ֥ר (On or In the Mount) LEVITICUS 25:1 – 26:2

PROPHETS : JEREMIAH 32:6-22| GOSPEL : LUKE 4:14-22
TORAH:
The mount spoken of here is Mount Sinai. Mosheh is back up on Mount Sinai getting instructions from YaHVaH to tell the Israelites.
It begins with instructions on keeping a Sabbath for the land. Every 7 years the land is supposed to be left to grow by itself with no sowing or harvesting. Next, there is to be a Jubilee (Yobel in Hebrew) year at the end of 7 Sabbaths, in other words the 50th year. There too is the land not to be sown or harvested. This allows the land to recover and be more productive for the people. Today, a different system is used by farmers called crop rotation. It works similar to this law; however, it may occur more frequently than 7 years. Not everyone practices this today either, unfortunately.
Next, there comes an interesting section about not grieving your fellow or one another. What this means is the sales price of the land should be set by the number of crops in accordance to the Jubilee year. Land prices today are not set by this law, but rather by it’s value in location and improvements on the property. The prices are also set by size of the property, such as acres in farm land.
