PROPHETS: 1 KINGS 7:51-8:21 | GOSPEL: LUKE 16:1-13

by Min. Donald H. Garrett
TORAH:
The start of this section is about the accounting/reckoning of who is in charge of all the labor to construct the Tabernacle; then describes the quantity by weight of all materials given for the Tabernacle and all of its items.
Chapter 39 begins with discussing how all of the priests robes, breastplate, ephod, headplate, tunics and robes are made; describing in detail what wool, linen, metals and stones were used. It continues with Mosheh inspecting the Tabernacle work. Mosheh sees that Israel has completed all the work just as YaHVaH had instructed, so he blesses them.
Chapter 40 is the instructions on how and when to set up the Tabernacle. The Tabernacle was first set up on Abib 1st. Just as YaHVaH had commanded the Tabernacle to be set up, so Mosheh did and completed the work. This reading ends with YaHVaH’s presence filling the Tabernacle.
This also completes the Book of Sh’moth (Exodus) and traditionally, these words are said at the end of each book of the Torah: “Chazak! Chazak! Venischazeik!” meaning (Be strong! Be strong! And may we be strengthened!).
PROPHETS:
The readings in the 1 Kings begins by describing the making of the items for the Temple of YaHVaH by Hiram and King Solomon. Items sanctified by King David were then brought to the Temple treasuries.
In Chapter 8, King Solomon gathers all of the elders and men of Yisrael to witness the placing the Ark of the Covenant in the Temple. He then blesses the entire congregation.
