SHELACH שְׁלַח (Send) NUMBERS 13:1-15:41

PROPHETS : JOSHUA 2:1-24| GOSPEL : MATTHEW 10:1-14

TORAH:

This parshah starts out with YaHVaH commanding Mosheh (Moses) to send out leaders from each of the tribes of Israel, except Levi. Instead, the tribe of Yoseph (Joseph) were separated into two, one from Manasseh and Ephraim. This brought the total to 12 leaders that were sent. Hosea, son of Nun, from the tribe of Ephraim was called Y’hoshua (Joshua) by Mosheh. Y’hoshua is the name from which our Savior Yeshua is derived from, though He did not come from this tribe.

In Chapter 13, the men are sent out and survey the land, the area we know as Israel today and surrounding area in “the season of the first ripe grapes”(Numbers 13:20, Tanach). It is rich and bountiful, for which they bring back some samples after spying out the land for 40 days . However, the race of giants from the Nephillim also live in a portion of this land. When reporting to Mosheh, most of the leaders show fear and apprehension giving a negative report because of the size of the giants, stating they will not be able to overcome them because they were like grasshoppers in their eyes.

In Chapter 14, the entire assembly and All the Children of Israel murmured as a result of the report. However,Joshua, son of Nun, and Caleb of the tribe of Yehudah (Judah) dispute this report and begs the people not to rebel against YaHVaH, but they are not listened to by the people. In fact, they are about be pelted by stones. Immediately, the glory of YaHVaH appeared to all. YaHVaH speaks to Mosheh threatening to smite the entire people for this rebellion. Mosheh has to plead for their lives.
