holy ones

Kedoshim, K’doshim, or Qedoshim (קְדֹשִׁים‎—Hebrew for “holy ones,” the 14th word, and the first distinctive word, in the parashah) is the 30th weekly Torah portion ( פָּרָשָׁה‎, parashah) in the annual Jewish cycle of Torah reading and the seventh in the Book of Leviticus. It constitutes Leviticus 19:1–20:27. (Wikipedia) Leviticus, in Hebrew the book is called Vayikra (Hebrew: וַיִּקְרָא), from the opening of the book, va-yikra “And He [God] called.”

TORAH:

In this parashah, you have the restatement of the Ten Commandments/Words.

10 Commandments/Words

A key verse is 19:18b, “. . . you shall love your neighbor as yourself – I am YaHVaH.” Yeshua used this verse in the Brit HaChadashah (New Testament) as the 2nd greatest commandment: “31 And the second, like it, is this: ‘You shall love your neighbor as yourself.’ There is no other commandment greater than these.” (Mark 12:31, NKJV). Here again we see the Torah and New Testament aligned on the Commandments.

Chapter 19 continues from Chapter 18, more that is forbidden: No mixtures of animals, No sex with a maidservant/slave, No sorcery, No believing in lucky times, and keeping proper measuring scales and devices. Also included is the requirements of honoring elders and sages, observing the Sabbath, and when to first harvest planted fruit trees

Chapter 20 is the punishments chapter for the forbidden relations from chapter 18 (previous parashah) and Chapter 19. It also deals out punishments for desecration, sorcery, and more. This is all with the intentions to keep the people and their land HOLY. As listed above, it constitutes the theme of this reading.

PROPHETS:

The reading from Amos 9 begins with YaHVaH being upset with all of Israel for their sinful kingdom. Verse 9 states that YaHVaH will distribute the people among the nations (exactly what happened many centuries ago) and many will perish for their evil. However, verse 11 states that YaHVaH will raise up the fallen from the house of David. Verses 12 through 15 is a declaration of how they will be re-established in the land and dwell in all the nations. They will be come prosperous, planted on the land YaHVaH gave them and never be uprooted again. We believe this prophecy has been fulfilled by the re-establishing of the state of Israel in 1948 and the prosperity and increase they have enjoyed to this day. The flag over the nation is the Magen David , matching verse 11. Awesome!

GOSPEL:

The reading for today is where Yeshua’s disciples question him on what is the first and greatest commandment. Yeshua answers
